Tour de Suisse

August/September 2019

A three day bikepacking tour around Switzerland – that turned out a bit different from what was planned. #shotoniphone and #gopro by Dominik and me.

Stage 1: San Bernadino Pass

My old friend Dominik and I decided do get out for a few days to ride our bikes across two Swiss alpine passes and through both of the river Rhine's spring valleys. After a short night in the camper van we started out early from Bonaduz to conquer the long 2.000 m climb through the Hinterrhein valley all the way up to the San Bernadino Pass.

Stage 2: San Bernadino Pass

Now it starts to get weird. San Bernadino again? Yes, well… right before we were about to catch some hardly needed hours of sleep before stage 2, we found out that our targeted Lukmanier Pass was closed due to a landslide. Long story short: We could have tried to push our bikes up and down a small MTB-trail to by-pass the landslide in pouring rain (at least that was the weather forecast's version of the story), or ride some extra 40 km and a hell lot of additional altitude meters across not one, but two passes (Gotthard and Oberalp Pass, to which our legs said nope), or cross San Bernadino once again in the opposite direction. We decided for the chicken run – but weren't disappointed.

Stage 3: Lake Constance

How exactly does Lake Constance fit into this trip you asked? Not at all, to be honest. But as the shitty weather forecasted for day 2 eventually hit in badly on day 3 – and we were about to drive to Friedrichshafen for the Eurobike Fair later that day anyway – we decided to go there early for an easy, no-climb, well signposted and paved with cafés ride in the comfort zone around Lake Constance. Completely different from the days before, but still recommendable.
